Halloween Night Frights
By Medha Vernekar
November 10, 2014
Friday the 31st marked one of the most loved holidays, the day where kids go around trick or treating, eating candies that eventually leads to the build up of cavities, several interesting and clearly last minute costumes and many other Halloween traditions. Due to cultural differences in Hong Kong, children don’t go door to door to collect candies, rather they choose a somewhat different approach to celebrate Halloween and surely, one of the best ways; to watch a horror movie. What a better way to savour up the frights of Halloween than classic tales of ghosts, ghouls, vampires, zombies and many more? Even though Halloween is over, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good horror movie, here are my top 5 picks for the most chilling horror movies.
Poltergeist
One of Steven Spielberg's greatest movies; Poltergeist tells the story around a cliche of a new family moving into a new house which turns out to be haunted. The youngest member of the family befriends an evil presence and also draws her into the spirit realm, the family now faces the challenge to bring her back and end this horror once and for all. This move consistently showcases shocks, good special effects and has defined horror movies for an entire generation.
The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense has engraved itself in the hall of fame of horror movies and has immortalized the line, “I see dead people.” Don’t worry, that’s not the spoiler everyone has been talking about, the plot follows this young boy who has the ability to see ghosts, these ghosts want his help to connect to the real world and to bring back justice. This move encompasses several jump scares and a plot twist that has shocked movie goers everywhere.
Insidious
One of the more recent horror movies, Insidious provides a new twist to the old cliches. A family moves into a new house and strange things occur resulting in their son to go into a coma. However, they soon come to the realization that it isn’t their house that is haunted, it’s their son. Insidious provides viewers with new jump scares, a fresh plot line and some very creepy characters. This one is sure to keep you up for a night.
The Ring
The Ring manages to frighten viewers despite not seeing the antagonist till the very end. The Ring starts of as an urban legend, seeing a video tape filled with horrific images which ultimately leads to a phone call with an anonymous person stating the words, “seven days”. The person then mysteriously dies in 7 days. Skeptical about this story, a reporter decides to investigate and what she finds, will keep viewers at the edge of their seats. The Ring cleverly puts in suspense and silence to intensify the feeling of audiences without every leaving them uninterested.
Shutter Island
Shutter Island falls into the category of psychological thriller but that doesn’t mean this movie won’t give you the creeps. Shutter Island contain the golden team of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo Dicaprio to present a cleverly crafted masterpiece that will leave viewers with their mouth hanging at the mind blowing plot twists. The dark and gritty setting of this movie pulls audiences into it’s world and provide several illusions leaving audiences to think about the movie after it’s over. The story includes a detective and his assistant entering an isolated island for the criminally insane in search of a missing patient, however what they discover is much more horrifying.
These movies are rated PG-13 yet still give brilliant scares without the blood and gore. Be sure to watch these movies and do try to get some sleep that night.

An Abundance of Katherines - Written by John Green
By Ananya Mohan
November 10, 2014
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Fiction
“What is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable?”
Everyone has a “type”. You know, a “type”.
Colin Singleton, an anagram-obsessed, poly-linguistic, math and science geek washed-up
child prodigy has a type too- to fall for girls named Katherine- and be dumped by all 19 of
them.
Depressed and desolate after being dumped by K-XIX, Colin, along with his best friend &
seer Hassan, goes on a (hopefully) therapeutic journey-a road trip.
While in this adventure, nerdy Colin is reluctantly working on a theorem. It is a formula that
determines the bond of the relationships between the factors underlying the characteristics
of a dumpee vs. of a dumper.
While on the road trip stopping to the fascinating town of Gutshot, Colin’s tale takes unexpected turns filled with adventure, drama, romance, and much more.
Verdict: 4.21 stars.
Although this book lacked a strong rigid plot basis, it had very well rounded characters, was beautifully written, had witty and comical dialogues, and was just simply touching, hilarious, enjoyable and entertaining at the same time.
This quirky coming of age novel is definitely a read for geeky and nerdy ones who have a taste for a witty sense of humor.
