Game Review: Five Nights at Freddy’s

By Sourashis Bhowmik

Let’s talk about the scariest game in the market today. The point-and-click horror game from Scott Cawthon has caused quite a sensation throughout the interwebs. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a story based in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where the player (Mike Schmidt) works as a night-time security guard.

Now, this is no Night at the Museum, there are severe complications present in the night time security job. The four animatronics of the pizzeria, Bonnie, Chica, Freddy and Foxy are animate dolls from hell, whose purpose is to roam at night and murder the guard. The protagonist works with a series of cameras to track the positions of the animatronics, and has doors which can be shut to prevent them from entering. All while dealing with the issue of battery. Survive for six hours, from midnight to six a.m., for five consecutive nights and collect your paycheck.

This game combines the horror of all night-time games with more essential skills such as power management, as a loss of power ends in death. This game is also a great example of how the suspense can build up to a final jump scare at the end. Overall, this game is an excellent one that deserves its hype and deserves its popularity as the top horror game of 2014.

Movember Awareness

By Medha Vernekar

It’s near the end of the year, bringing us to the month of November. Many might recognize November as the month where several men are spotted with a mustache; many even call November, “No-Shave November”. This month is also recognized as Movember, a month dedicated to growing a moustache to raise awareness about men’s health and various diseases such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental illnesses such as depression. It’s a global movement as seen with breast cancer awareness. Some facts that should interest you about Movember include:

  • The moustache that many men grow during this month actually represents the ribbon for men’s health. (Breast cancer is represented by a pink ribbon)

  • The men participating in this movement are called “Mo Bros”.

  • “Mo Bros” start their month clean shaven and they continue to grow and groom their mustache till the end of the month

  • Only mustaches allowed, no beards

  • Movember quickly became a fully-fledged event by the year 2012 and generated 1,043,219,076 HKD for men’s health awareness.

So, why should you support and/or take part in this movement? Diseases such as cancer can be very frightening, both for the individual and their families and to raise awareness on this topic means funding research to ultimately find a cure. Statistics show that a man dies from prostate cancer every hour and in the UK alone, more than 10,000 men will die from prostate cancer this year. Statistics also show that 1 in 4 people in the UK will develop some sort of mental health problem this year. Diseases such as this have affected everyone in some way or the other either directly or indirectly and yet, being so apparent, it continues to ruin lives. Movember is one of the hopes for a cure, for a solution.

How did this global movement start?  It first started in Melbourne about 12 years ago; a group of friends decided to flourish an old trend once again-mustaches. Around 30 men took part in it and realized how much fun this could be and used this as an opportunity to raise awareness on men’s health issues. In 4 years, the event achieved a growth of 45o participants and they managed to raise an amount of 300,000 HKD.

The brilliance of Movember goes to show, everyone has the capacity to make this world a better place and anyone can make a change.
