Cinderella

By Akhil Sindher

2015/03/24

The animated feature  Cinderella from the 1950's holds a special place in most people's hearts since they were kids and even until now. And what's not to love about it? It's a classic fairy tale about a young woman who wants to be something more by making her dreams and aspirations come true. However, it is so unique in the prospect that she never wants to do so by stepping over other's shoes, even when she is up against one of the most evil characters you see in the long list of Disney villains. With just one look the evil stepmother is someone who can wield her power over our heroine and comes out as the ultimate authority figure which is what really sets this villain apart. That's not  all what Cinderella has to go through she also has two step sisters who are sidekicks of the stepmother and all they do is try to destroy Cinderella's  love life and the way she is and try to undermine her any chance they get. But Cinderella isn't alone in her story; she also has her sidekicks such as the mouses, horses and birds and any animal surrounds her.  They can't even speak but still  play a pivotal  role in this movie where they support her. They give a lot of comedic relief when there is a lot of tension and their body language almost let's you know what they're thinking and what they're about to do. They too have their own nemesis which is the step mother's cat. The other thing that's really important and wonderful about this movie  is the songs that they feature from '' bippity Boppity boo'' to '' a dream is a wish your heart makes'',  you can't help humming  to the music and maybe even dancing a step or two. The music is almost like a character within the movie. The part where Cinderella gets her perfect dress and meets her fairy godmother is one of the times you get to witness Disney's magical moments things that fill you with wonder and awe. Cinderella is one of those films that will always be a part of our childhood and with the new live  adaptation coming maybe even for the  future generations. I would rate Cinderella a solid 4/5 since it's appealing to  children and  adults as well as sends a wonderful message for everyone to never give up and pay your dues.

The Fault in our Stars: The Journey to Survive

By Samyak Lunawat

The Fault in Our Stars is a novel written by John Green. The story basically talks about the main character, Hazel who is suffering from cancer. Hazel is not only trying to live a normal life of a teenager, but she is also struggling to determine about what will happen to her parents after she dies.

While attending the church’s support group for cancer survivors, she meets a boy named Augustus, a year older to her, and has a type of cancer that has caused him to lose his legs and wear a prosthetic.

On the very first day Hazel and Augustus’s meeting, the two get close to each other. The basis of their relationship begins through Hazel lending  “An Imperial Affliction”, her favourite book, to Augustus. She asks Augustus to read it and in turn, he requires her to read the book that is the basis of his favorite video game. Hazel relates to the character in her favorite book, Anna, since Anna has a rare blood cancer. Augustus and Hazel bond over the book because both of them of a burning desire to find out how the story ends because the author stops the book before providing conclusion on what happens to each of the characters.

Augustus joins Hazel's pursuit of the book's author, Peter Van Houten, to provide the answers that they need. Augustus even uses a wish foundation to go to Amsterdam with Hazel, where the author lives, to talk with him in person. While the readers think that Hazel is the one to die, Augustus ends up telling Hazel that at his recent scan, the doctors discovered that his entire body is filled with cancer.

This is a well-written novel . If you are a sensitive reader who might feel uncomfortable with the subject matter of cancer but likes to read books about love and teenage lives then you should surely read this book. Hazel not only provides teens with insight about what it is like to be dying but she also talks about losing someone you love. Her story is also about deciding to love someone and to be loved by someone, even though you know that it will cause pain to them when you are going to be separated.
