Easter Traditions

At the beginning of April comes another holiday; our second holiday break of semester 2. This is the Easter holiday. Easter is often celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. This year, the holiday break begins on April 1st, and will take place until April 10th.

 

One of the most well known traditions of Easter is making Easter Eggs. Eggs are believed to symbolize new life and fertility. Easter Eggs are usually dyed, painted, and otherwise decorated. They are involved in many holiday games. For instance, parents would hide eggs for children to find, and children would roll eggs down hills. Easter egg hunts and egg rolls are one of the most popular ways to celebrate Easter. The most famous egg roll every year is on the White House lawn.

 

Many places in Europe celebrate Easter in a variety of ways.  For example, Germans would colour the Easter eggs green, and hang them on trees. Austrians would place tiny plants around the eggs and boil them, leaving behind patterns on the eggs.

 

Moreover, hares and rabbits are also symbols of fertility. In Germany, people would normally dress in hare costumes and lay eggs for children to find. They also bake cakes of the shape of hares and make chocolate bunnies and eggs.
